Coworker accused in Rancho Mirage yogurt shop stabbing

A Palm Desert man was behind bars today on suspicion of stabbing a woman at the Rancho Mirage frozen yogurt shop where they both worked, inflicting non-life-threatening wounds.

Shimon Silberfenig, 55, was arrested about 6 p.m. Monday at Swirl Cup Self Serve Yogurt in the 34100 block of Monterey Avenue on suspicion of assault
with a deadly weapon.

Authorities discovered that a female employee of the yogurt shop was stabbed by a male employee around 5:50 p.m. She was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, sheriff’s Sgt. Andrew Nielsen said.

The woman said Silberfenig “attacked her without provocation and stabbed her several times,” said Nielsen, who did not cite a motive for the stabbing.

Silberfenig was being held at the county jail in Indio in lieu of $25,000 bail and was expected to be arraigned Thursday at the Larson Justice Center, according to jail records.

Police say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Investigator Judes at (760) 836-1600 or (760) 836-3215 or Crimestoppers at (760) 341-STOP.
