Azarenka withdraws from BNP Paribas Open

The winner of last year’s BNP Paribas Open and women’s top seed, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus,withdrew from the tournament today, citing an injured right ankle.She was set to face eighth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the next match.

The announcement came just minutes ago via Twitter:

The withdrawal doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. After defeating Urszula Radwanska on Tuesday in the round of 16 play, Azarenka had this to say:

“It was pretty obvious I wasn’t feeling that well — my ankle wasbothering me, it’s been bothering me for a while, and it hasn’t really beengetting better.”

Azarenka is 17-0 this year.
