High wind warning for Coachella Valley

A red flag warning was scheduled today for easternRiverside County as strong gusty winds buffeted mountain areas and theCoachella Valley.

The National Weather Service scheduled a high wind warning for theCoachella Valley and mountains until 9 p.m., saying sustained winds of 25 to 35miles per hour were gusting up to 65 mph. Isolated gusts up to 80 mph were alsopossible, according to the agency.

A red flag warning for eastern Riverside County, where relative humiditywas as low as 13 percent, was scheduled from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Winds will increase this morning with strongest winds this afternooninto early this evening,” an NWS advisory said.

The winds were making driving difficult, especially for motorists withhigh-profile vehicles, according to the weather service, which cautionedmotorists to watch out for broken tree limbs and in the Coachella Valley, blowing dust and sand.

“Unsecured items such as yard furniture, tents, umbrellas and trashcans should be tied down or moved inside,” the agency advised.

In valley areas, a less severe wind advisory was scheduled from noon to6 p.m.

According to the NWS, during the wind advisory, there will be sustainedwinds of 15 to 25 mph gusting up to 40 mph.
