Government Day exposes local students to career options

Local high school students will shadow two Riverside County Superior Court judges and other county employees during the Fourth District’s annual Youth in Government Day today.

Deputy District Attorney Amity Armes will give opening remarks at 8:30
a.m. at the Workforce Development Center in Indio, and students will meet their “mentors” for the day.

Judges Victoria Cameron and James Hawkins and 43 other local county
employees will be paired with 45 high school students from Desert Christian
Academy and Cathedral City, Coachella Valley, Desert Mirage, Palm Desert and
Palm Springs.

“Thanks to many participating county employees, high school students
are getting an opportunity to experience a great variety of rewarding career
choices available in public service,” County Supervisor John Benoit said.

Participating county departments include the fire and sheriff’s departments, the District Attorney’s Office, the Law Offices of the Public Defender, Animal Services, Child Support Services, Code Enforcement, Economic Development Agency, Environmental Health, Human Resources, Mental Health, the Office on Aging, Probation, Public Health, Public Social Services, the Regional Park and Open-Space District and the Transportation and Land Management Agency.
