Legal milestones in LGBT equality will be discussed in Palm Desert today

Attorney Paul Marchand will give a lecture in Palm Desert today about legal milestones in LGBT equality.

The lecture, titled “Eyes On the Prize — Major Legal Milestones in theEvolution of LGBT Equality,” is scheduled at 10 a.m. in the OliphantAuditorium at Cal State San Bernardino Palm Desert, 37500 Cook St.

Marchand is an instructor at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, aprogram of Cal State San Bernardino’s College of Extended Learning.

His topics will include Illinois’ passage of the first “consentingadults’ law in 1962; Proposition 6 (the Briggs Initiative), an initiative onthe California state ballot in 1978 that would have banned gays and lesbiansfrom working in public schools; and the “Twinkie Defense,” a term coined byreporters in the trial of San Francisco Supervisor Dan White in 1979 for thekillings of San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone.

The event is co-sponsored by the CENTER, which works with the local gayand lesbian population.

The lecture is free with a reservation. Parking will cost $5 per vehicle.
