Sinkhole creates traffic troubles in Palm Desert

The driver of a Honda Accord unsuspectingly drove into a sinkhole Monday night in Palm Desert.

It happened sometime before 11:30 p.m.

Drivers should expect delays in Palm Desert Monday while Coachella Valley Water District workers repair a sinkhole apparently caused by a broken sewer line, a water district spokeswoman said.

The sinkhole, about 10-by-20 feet, was reported on Cook Street near Sheryl Avenue.

One lane of northbound Cook and the northbound turning lane from Cook onto Sheryl will be closed so crews can fix the sewer line and road, according to the water district.

“The cause appears to be a broken sewer line. No sewage has leaked outside of the sinkhole,” according to a district statement.

Water and sewer service is unaffected.

The Honda Accord was pulled out by a tow truck. Reports from the scene tell us the driver was not injured.
