Valley neighbors worry what summer storm will bring after 2012 flooding

When thick, dark clouds moved into the desert Friday, they put neighbors at the Tramview Mobile Home Park in Cathedral City on edge.

“I’m praying this isn’t going to happen again with the flood,” said resident Kami Sawatski.

A nightmare became a reality around this time last year when a summer storm sent floodwaters and debris rushing across East Palm Canyon Drive, into several businesses and into the Tramview mobile homes. The mess was created after a temporary dam in Eagle Canyon broke.

A flash flood warning went into effect Friday with a flash flood watch expected to last through the weekend. Neighbors said they could only cross their fingers and prepare.

“Just get everything up off the floor in the house, because (the water) usually comes rushing through here,” said Sawatski.

The county expects construction on the new Eagle Canyon dam is expected to be completed in early 2014.

“I don’t feel comfortable until it’s completed,” said mobile home resident Richard Knutson.

“I Wish it would’ve came sooner, just glad it’s coming in,” said resident Chris Rossmiller.

Until the bulldozers clear out, when it rains, Sawatski’s staying put.

“I’m staying home for sure. I just hope I can get out of here if it doesn’t come down too hard,” said Sawatski.
