Immigrant driver’s license bill remains in limbo

Immigrants who are in the country illegally would be able to get special California drivers’ licenses under a bill approved by the state Senate, but it was not certain whether it would be sent to the governor this year.

Supporters of AB60 said allowing immigrants to be licensed would make the roads safer by ensuring they pass driver’s tests and have insurance. No lawmaker spoke in opposition when it passed the Senate Thursday on a 28-8 vote.

It goes back to the Assembly for final consideration with just hours left in this year’s legislative session.

But the bill’s author, Democratic Assemblyman Luis Alejo of Watsonville, told The Associated Press after the Senate vote that he was unsure if he would push for the final action in the Assembly.
