Man shot and killed at home in Thousand Palms

An early Friday morning shooting has left one man dead and another in custody.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Just before 10:00 a.m. Friday morning they were called to a home on the 30-000 block of Monte Vista Way in Thousand Palms for a reported shooting.

When they arrived they found a 29-year-old Hispanic man suffering from an unknown number of gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to the hospital where he later died says the Sheriff Department.

“It was scary because I don’t know what happened,” said neighborRosa Avalos.

Instead of enjoying Halloween candy, neighbors spent the morning running for cover.

“You step outside with your kids and you don’t even know what can happen. If by accident a bullet strikes a child. we are not safe anymore.,” said neighborGuadalupe Rodriguez. “I immediately ran and hide with my kids in the closet.”

“We were just getting ready to leave and all at once the police cars star coming,” said neighborRichard Mountz.

Deputies identified a 22-year-old Hispanic man as the shooter. He was handcuffed and detained in the back of a police car as were a number of other witnesses.

“At this time the public doesn’t need to be concerned or worried, all of the parities have been detained. there was only one shooter and the neighborhood is safe at this time,” said DeputyJulio Oseguera.

Neighbors tell us the reason they moved to this area was to get away from violence like this.

“I’ve been living here for 3 months and I don’t even know what I got myself into,” saidRodriguez.

“I’m scared real scared, thank God that my kids are in school right now,” said Avalos.

Avalos says she’s lived in the area for over 20 years and is shocked how close the bullets flew.

“Not in front of my house, I’ve heard places from outside the city, but not in Thousand Palms.

“I don’t like it because this as always been a nice community,” said Mountz.
