Tribe to meet with local government leaders
The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians will hold a private meeting this Friday with local government leaders to discuss the tribe’s legal fight over Riverside County’s possessory interest tax.
The tax creates millions of dollars in revenue for cities, schools, and other government agencies.
A tribal spokesperson says this is the first proactive step the tribe will take to keep local governments informed on the status of its lawsuit.
The lawsuit asks a federal judge to rule that Riverside County’s collection of a possessory interest tax on the reservation is illegal.
The tax is paid by Indian land leaseholders.
The meeting this Friday will not be open to the public.
