Fugitive wanted for child rape arrested in Mexico
A fugitive wanted in Riverside County for the rape and sexual assault of a minor has been arrested in Mexicali.
Officials said Carlos Nunez Portillo, who turns 47 years old on Sunday, was arrested by Mexican law enforcement after the U.S. Marshal’s Pacific Regional Fugitive Task Force tipped them off to his location.
Nunez Portillo was transported to the Indio Jail on February, 4, where he’s being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to officials.
In July of 2009, the victim told the Indio Police Department that she had been sexually assaulted by Nunez Portillo over the previous year while she was 14 and 15 years old. She also told police that Nunez Portillo said if she didn’t do what he wanted or if she told anyone, he would cause her mother to live on the streets.
While police were investigating the allegations on July 24, 2009, Nunez Portillo disappeared.
A $100,000 arrest warrant was issued for the suspect at that time.
Nunez Portillo was scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
