Fake university operator convicted of fraud
A San Francisco Bay Area woman has been convicted of running a fake university that was a front for foreign students seeking to establish U.S. immigration status.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports 43-year-old Susan Su was found guilty Monday of charges including wire and mail fraud, visa fraud and money laundering.
Prosecutors say she netted $5.9 million while operating the phony Tri-Valley University in Pleasanton, which she billed as a “Christian higher education institution.” Prosecutors say foreigners, mostly Indian nationals, paid $2,700 a semester in tuition for visa-related documents that purportedly allowed them to live and work in the country with a student immigration status.
Su used the money to buy real estate and a Mercedes-Benz.
Sentencing is set for June 20.
