Brothers plead not guilty in cousin’s death

Two teenage brothers pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to charges stemming from the shooting death of their cousin in Indio.

Raymond Hernandez, 18, and 16-year-old Joseph Anthony Hernandez were arrested April 17th in connection with the killing of Manuel Chavarria Hernandez.

The 36-year-old victim was found with a bullet wound to the head in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 83-300 block of Avenue 44 about 1 a.m. April 11th, Indio police spokesman Ben Guitron said.

Both brothers were charged with murder and other counts, with the 16-year-old charged as an adult.

Guitron said the suspected murder weapon was recovered, and that the shooting stemmed from a dispute.

Raymond Hernandez is being held at the county jail in Indio without bail, and Joseph Hernandez is being held at Juvenile Hall in Indio.

The suspects will return to the Larson Justice Center on May 7 for a felony settlement conference and bail hearing.
