“First Ladies of Disco” event to benefit the AIDS Assistance Program
The “first ladies of disco” will take the stage in Palm Springs today (Saturday) to benefit the AIDS Assistance Program.
The 21st annual “Evening Under the Stars,” to be held at the O’Donnell Golf Club, will raise money for the organization’s food voucher program. Previous galas have raised more than half of the program’s annual expenses, according to the AIDS Assistance Program.
Today’s performers are Linda Clifford, France Joli, Evelyn King, Maxine Nightingale, Pamala Stanley, Anita Ward, Martha Wash and the former members of Chic — Alfa Anderson, Luci Martin and Norma Jean. The event’s theme was inspired by the book, “First Ladies of Disco: 32 Stars Discuss the Era and Their Singing Careers,” by James Arena.
Past headliners have included Melissa Manchester, Suzanne Somers, Barry Manilow, Lily Tomlin, the Supremes’ Mary Wilson and Cyndi Lauper.
The event, which starts at 5:30 p.m., will include cocktails, live and silent auctions, awards, food and dancing. Honorees include former local television station owner James Houston, Spencer’s restaurant owner Harold Matzner, Temple Isaiah’s Rabbi Sally Olins and Eisenhower HIV/AIDS specialist Dr. John Stansell.
General admission tickets cost $395, “preferred” tickets are $500, VIP tickets go for $1,000 and “premium” VIP tickets can be had for $1,500.
