Drug Making Materials Cause Coachella House Fire

Two men remained in critical condition Wednesday night at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, following a house fire in Coachella.

The fire erupted at a home on the 1300 Block of 5th Street in Coachella just after 6:00 p.m. The fire was contained at approximately 6:25 p.m.

The Riverside County Special Investigation Bureau said they discovered materials inside the home that could’ve been used in a drug lab, but exactly what kind of drugs were being made is not known.

The first arriv ing engine company reported a single story, single family residence with heavy smoke showing from the rear of the structure. They found two men, inside the home at the time of the fire, down the street with severe burns throughout their entire bodies. Both patients in their 30’s were transported to a trauma facility – one by MERCY AIR ambulance and the other via ground ambulance.

The fire was contained to two rooms and its contents of the 700-square foot residence. The loss was estimated at $5,000 with an approximate save of $30,000, according to CalFire.

As of 11:30 p.m. firefighters and a hazmat crew remained on scene for salvage and overhaul.
