Truancy sweep targets east valley parents and students

Several parents and two teenagers are in trouble with the law after a truancy sweep in the east valley.

Police and probation officers conducted Wednesday’s operation in Thermal, Mecca and Coachella.

Four parents and two juveniles were cited for curfew violations.

Six other teenagers were also taken back to school.

Those cited for violations can expect disciplinary proceedings, fines and or court fees.

The Southern Coachella Valley Community Services District Team, the Coachella Community Action Team, and the Riverside County Probation Office were all involved in the sweep conducted by the Coachella Valley Unified School District.

The Riverside County Sheriffs Department says the operation was designed to locate juvenile students who either failed to report to their assigned campus, or left school campuses without permission.

The department reminded people that going to school is not matter of preference; it is a matter of law.
