New assisted-living LGBT apartment complex to open in Palm Springs this summer

A senior assisted-living complex for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people will open in Palm Springs this summer.

Billed as the first of its kind in Palm Springs, Stonewall Gardens will have 24 units, according to its operator, Northstar Senior Living.

The development at 2150 N. Palm Canyon Drive was built in the 1950s a bungalow-style resort, and renovations started in March, publicist Tim O’Bayley said.

“As an LGBT-centric community, we anticipate that the majority of our residents will be of that background. However, our community is one of inclusion, and if a non-LGBT person or couple wishes to make Stonewall Gardens their home, we would welcome them,” said Steven Kregel, Northstar’s chief operating officer.

John Raymond, Palm Springs’ director of Community and Economic Development, called the development “exciting news” and “much needed.”

The complex will have one-bedroom, shared and studio apartments with patios, open-air dining, an outdoor entertainment area, educational, social and recreational programs, a full-time licensed nurse and a 24-hour staff, O’Bayley said.

Initial costs start at $3,500, and monthly costs begin at $3,850 based on the level of care the person needs.

Reservations and deposits are being accepted. A model apartment should be open for tours in July.
