Brush fire in Mecca contained

Firefighters contained a brush fire that has scorched 14 acres of brush in Mecca.

The blaze was reported at 6:23 p.m. Thursday in the area of Avenue 64 and Lincoln Street, said Melody Hendrickson of the Riverside County Fire Department. The fire spread slowly through medium to heavy brush, she said.

Sixty firefighters from 17 engine companies were at the location, Hendrickson said, adding that crews from the Imperial Irrigation District and Palms Springs Fire Department were also providing assistance.

Overnight, the scene was reduced to five engine companies and one water tender, according to Hendrickson.

The first reports from the incident commander indicated the blaze had burned 5 to 7 acres and 28 firefighters were on scene, Hendrickson said.

The fire was 100 percent by Friday morning.
