Proposed boundaries established for CVWD divisions
The Board of Directors for the Coachella Valley Water District have approved a map that establishes new boundaries for the district’s five divisions, officials announced Friday.
The change was made following the passage of Measure D in Tuesday’s Primary Election. The approval of Measure D changes the way in which CVWD board members are elected.
Instead of being elected at-large by all registered voters within the district boundaries, the board members will be elected only by the voters within their division. Candidates for the board must reside within the boundaries of the division they wish to represent, officials explained.
Previously, the divisions were drawn to be nearly equal in acreage. Under the new process, the divisions need to be as equal in population as possible and also must be drawn to consider factors such as geography, cohesiveness and communities of interest, district officials said.
CVWD formed an advisory committee of community representatives to help create the new map that could be approved by the Registrar of Voters in time for the November election.
The seats representing divisions 1, 3 and 5 are up for election in November. Directors serve four-year terms.
The Coachella Valley Water District is a public agency governed by a five-member board of directors and serves approximately 108,000 residential and business customers.
