Summer `Lit Flicks’ starts tonight

UCR Palm Desert will start its Lit Flicks movie series today.

The theme for the summer series is “Dark Secrets, Real Lives.” “Quiz Show,” directed by Robert Redford, will be shown at 5:30 p.m. in the campus auditorium.

Each movie in the series is based on a work of literature. Before each screening there will be a discussion among film and literary experts and Tod Goldberg, director of UCR Palm Desert’s master of fine arts program. Afterward, the film adaptation will be discussed, and the audience will be encouraged to
read the book on which the film is based.

“Quiz Show,” starring John Turturro and Ralph Fiennes, is about an attorney working for a congressional subcommittee who discovers that television quiz shows are being fixed. It’s based on Richard N. Goodwin’s memoir, “Remembering America.”

The other films are “All the President’s Men,” to be screened July 23, and “Philomena,” to be shown Aug. 27.

Lit Flicks is sponsored by UCR Palm Desert’s MFA in creative writing program.

Admission is free, and reservations are recommended at
