Arrest in Indio murder case

A suspected gunman was arrested in the killing of an Indio resident earlier this month, a sergeant said Saturday.

An officer pulled over Nestor Gazca Cervantes, of Coachella, as he was driving near Avenue 54 and Shady Lane at 7 p.m. Friday. He was arrested for his alleged role in the fatal shooting of Christopher Luis Aguilar, 25, of Indio, July 20, Indio police Sgt. Dan Marshall said.

Dispatchers sent officers that night to the 83700 block of Avenue 48, in Indio, and found Aguilar lying on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Aguilar was taken to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital where he later died.

A earlier fatal shooting July 20 was reported in Indio but it was unknown whether Cervantes was connected to it, according to police.

Witnesses identified Cervantes as the alleged gunman who killed Aguilar, Marshall said.

Cervantes was booked into jail for suspicion of murder and held in lieu of $1 million bail, Marshall said.
