Monkey bites woman outside pizza shop

On Tuesday, officials took custody of a monkey that bit a woman outside a pizza restaurant in Beaumont over the weekend.

The owner of the capuchin monkey surrendered the pet — along with two
other monkeys — to Riverside County Animal Services and California Department of Fish and Wildlife officers in Cherry Valley.

The bite was reported about 3:30 p.m. Sunday outside Antonious Pizza on
Beaumont Avenue in Beaumont, Animal Services spokesman John Welsh said.

The victim, a 35-year-old Cherry Valley woman, was treated at a hospital
for a laceration on one of her forearms. The monkey will be quarantined for
six months at a Fish and Wildlife facility to ensure it’s not carrying the
rabies virus, Welsh said.

The other two monkeys were impounded because the owner didn’t have a
permit to own them. She may be able to get them back if she gets the proper permits, Welsh said.
