Clean up underway following Monday storm

John Adams Elementary School in La Quinta will remain closed today because of damages it sustained in Monday’s downpour in the Coachella Valley.

The school was evacuated Monday because the electricity was shut off after water got into utility rooms. Students were bused to the district’s headquarters on Dune Palms Road in La Quinta, where parents could pick them up.

The school will reopen Wednesday, according to the district.

The La Quinta Public Library on Calle Tampico was also closed Monday because of flooding, but library officials said they hope to be open today.

Monday’s rains resulted in the closure of flooded streets throughout the Coachella Valley — not just La Quinta, but also Palm Springs, Indio, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, Bermuda Dunes and Thousand Palms.

The rain was caused by north-flowing monsoonal moisture in the atmosphere associated with tropical storm Norbert.

The National Weather Service forecast a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the mountains of Riverside County this afternoon, but there was no immediate forecast of more precipitation in the Coachella Valley.

The remnants of Norbert also generated strong winds Monday and prompted the issuance of a blowing dust advisory that expired in the Coachella Valley at 7 p.m. Monday.
