John Adams Elementary School expected to reopen Wednesday

Officials with the Desert Sands Unified School District said power to John Adams Elementary School in La Quinta was fully restored by 8:30 p.m. Monday. Cleanup at the school continues, but a full reopening is anticipated on Wednesday, September 10.

The school’s power was knocked out Monday morning after flood waters seeped into a utility room.

Students were evacuated and taken to the Community Building at District 47950 on Dune Palms Road where they were supervised until their parents could arrange to pick them up.

Despite the power being restored Monday night, officials had already decided to cancel class on Tuesday because there was still quite a bit of cleanup in order before students returned to school.

All schools affected by Monday’s storm are working to tidy up from the aftermath of any remnants left behind.

Superintendent Dr. Gary Rutherford issued a statement thanking the entire district team, particularly the staff at Adams Elementary, the city of La Quinta and local utility companies, and the La Quinta Police Department for their immediate actions to ensure the safety of the students and to quickly reopen the school.

“We are very proud of the children enrolled at the school who handled their morning’s adventure using the listening skills that have been taught and working with their teachers to establish a new routine for the day,” Dr. Rutherford said in the statement.

Once again, district officials anticipate and plan for John Adams Elementary School to reopen for normal operations Wednesday.
