Valley woman returns from Cabo after Hurricane Odile

Hurricane Odile battered the popular resort town of Cabo San Lucas as a Category 3 storm.

Days later, many people remain stuck there — some without power or running water. Valley resident, Angela Wells, was in Cabo when then storm hit and was one of the first Americans to return to the states.

“Definitely the most horrific night of my life,” said Wells.

Her dream vacation turned into a nightmare. The night before the storm hit, the resort where she was staying slipped letters under guests doors warning them a hurricane was coming but not to worry.

“And I woke up to a phone call at 7:30 the next morning from them basically saying we’re closing down, you have to get out. Call your airlines, reschedule your flights, you have to get out, we are not remaining open and you can’t stay here,” she added.

Wells and her friend left the resort and checked into another hotel near the airport — a decision she would later be thankful she made. Then, early Sunday morning Odile hit.

“You could just hear screams of the wind coming through it and you could feel the building because of the height shaking,” described Wells.

She woke up the next day to complete destruction everywhere she looked. She also learned there was a possibility she would be stuck there for a week. Instead, she became one of the first Americans to return home.

“We grabbed our bags and we high tailed it as fast as we could carrying 80 to 90 pounds worth of stuff to the airport and jumped in line still not even really knowing what was going on but we had heard that the Mexican government was flying people out,” she added.

She heard right. Wells said she’s thankful she got out, but determined to help those left behind.

“Tell them to go to the Cabo airport because that’s where they’re being airlifted out of,” she said.

She is also using her Instagram account to help those with loved ones stuck in Cabo.

“And they go through my pictures and some of them are finding their mother in my pictures and their responding that’s my mother and I’m responding I’ve had conversations with you’re mother she’s an amazing woman and she got out she’s in Mexico City now,” concluded Wells.
