Crash happened on 4th of July in Palm Springs

A mental competency report on a 55-year-old man accused in a deadly hit-and-run on the 4th of July in Palm Springs is scheduled to be heard in court Tuesday.

David Buckley Doyle pleaded not guilty. He’s accused of striking 53-year old Mark Norton who was on a motor scooter.

Doyle is charged with DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence, and hit-and-run causing death.

In September, a judge granted a defense request to have a psychologist examine Doyle.

Police say Doyle was southbound on Indian Canyon in a pick-up truck when he struck Norton head-on near Tamarisk Road. The Yamaha motor scooter Norton was riding was
embedded in the truck and carried about a mile before Doyle stopped and fled.

The criminal complaint alleges Doyle was driving “under the combined influence of an alcoholic beverage and a drug,” but did not say what the drug was.
