Meeting set for tonight to discuss driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants

Community groups will meet tonight in Coachella to talk driver’s licences for undocumented immigrants.

California lawmakers will allow the Department of Motor Vehicles to issue licenses to those in the country illegally starting next year.

Governor Jerry Brown signed AB 60 into law in 2013.

Today’s event is to discuss what documents immigrants will have to provide and what they’ll have to study to obtain a drivers license when that new law takes effect in January.

Undocumented immigrant licenses can only be used to drive, but not for identification.

The meeting is at the auditorium of Bobby Duke Middle School at 85358 Bagdad Street in Coachella.

The meeting starts at 6:15 p.m. and will be attended by the California Highway Patrol, the Mexican Consulate and Department of Insurance.
