Pilot killed in military plane crash

A military jet has crashed into a field near a naval base in Southern California, killing the pilot.

The plane crashed and disintegrated at around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday near Naval Station Ventura County. The base is located near the city of Port Hueneme, about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

The county Fire Department says the plane was a Hawker Hunter, a single-seat fighter jet. Nobody on the ground was hurt.

It’s unclear whether the plane was taking off or landing from the Navy base.
