Humana prompts wellness events in Valley

The Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation is one of the biggest events that hits the Valley all year, especially when it comes to wellness. The title sponsor of the PGA Tour golf tournament will end its four-year run in the desert following this year’s tournament, but the 8-day schedule begins this Saturday.

“It’s trying to encourage people to find simple ways in their day-to-day routine to live a healthier life,” said Humana spokesperson Jim Turner. “When you look at the turnout for events like this year in and year out, when you look at all the people who have taken pedometers at the humana challenge or downloaded the charity miles app and tracked their steps, based on the numbers we’ve seen the first three years, it’s been a success because people have really embraced it.” Humana’s Well-Being Walk and Healthy Fun Fair start at 9am at the La Quinta Civic Center campus, with the fair portion set to start at 10am.

Humana was a launching pad for other La Quinta city projects, like the renovated La Quinta Senior Center, now the La Quinta Wellness Center. The opening was strategically planned to open alongside the opening of the Humana Challenge. The Wellness Center went through a $3.3 million dollar makeover, adding 6,000 square footage, half of which went to a new workout area. The fitness center includes brand-new tecnhogym equipment, designed to not only attract seniors, but also kids and adults of all ages.

Other events in desert cities are also promoting wellness this weekend, including in Palm Springs. “Well we’re standing here in what’s actually called a yoga circle and this is the location for the wellness festival for the 4th annual Mayor’s Race and Wellness Festival.” The 10 mile run and 5k start at 7:30am and 8am at Wellness park, near Ruth Hardy park. The slogan is for patrons to come for the run, and stay for the fun. The event used to be held in April, but jumped to January, coinciding with the Humana Challenge.
