Some 8,000 students affected by data breach at U.C. Riverside

Officials from the University of California, Riverside have told some 8,000 people that their personal information has been compromised after the theft of a computer.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise says Monday that the university has notified nearly all of the graduate students and graduate school applicants affected by the data breach.

It came from the theft of a desktop computer in a break-in to graduate division offices on March 13.

Campus spokeswoman Kris Lovekin says the breach is being announced now because it took this long to determine who was affected.

Lovekin says there is no evidence that that the computer has been used for identity theft. She says school officials also don’t believe the computer can be used to access the university’s larger network.
