Exhausted hiker rescued in Palm Springs

A hiker was rescued from the Skyline Trail in Palm Springs Sunday night after he called 911 to report he was out of water, very weak and dehydrated. The trailhead is located near the Palm Springs Art Museum at 101 Museum Way.

Lieutenant Mike Kovaleff said the man called for help around 6:05 p.m. after he had been hiking all day.

The Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Unit and the Palm Springs Fire Department hiked up the trail to attempt to find the man. A helicopter from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department was also brought in to help.

Kovaleff said the rescue team found the man and airlifted him to an ambulance and he was then taken to the hospital for treatment.

Local hiking trails such as the Skyline Trail attract thousands of visitors from around the world every year, and authorities want to remind visitors to wear appropriate clothing for the conditions, bring plenty of water, have a fully charged cell phone, stay on the trails and allow enough time to return to the trailhead well before it gets dark.
