Water main break in Mecca shuts down road

The intersection of Dale Kiler Road and 3rd Street in Mecca was closed to traffic Tuesday afternoon when an underground water main broke, flooding the road and causing concerns of a potential sinkhole.

The 12″ water line broke around noon.

Cal Fire and the Coachella Valley Water District was called to handle the incident. Crews began replacing about five feet of pipe late Tuesday afternoon and determined there was no danger of a sinkhole.

CVWD shut off water in the area but service continued to all surrounding residents.

All directions of the intersection were closed to traffic and repairs were expected to be complete at 7:30 p.m. CHP advised drivers to avoid the area.

The cause of the water line break is still under investigation.
