13-year-old suspected of beating elderly employee during bike theft

A teenager was facing robbery and assault charges Friday morning, accused of beating up an 84-year-old employee who tried to stop him from stealing two bicycles from the La Quinta Walmart off Highway 111.

Authorities did not release the suspect’s name because he’s only 13. He is now in custody at the Riverside County Juvenile Hall in Indio.

The worker had tried to stop him Thursday evening shortly after 5:30 p.m. Deputies later found the teen suspect near La Quinta Park at Blackhawk Way and Adams Street.

The elderly man was treated for his injuries at the scene and the stolen bicycle was recovered, according to authorities.
