Youth empowered by ‘Supergirl’ screening in Cathedral City

People of all ages slipped on their capes and flew into action for the advanced screening of the new CBS action packed drama “Supergirl.” More than 100 people set their eyes on the big screen at the Desert Cinemas Ultramax Theater in Cathedral City Saturday for a first look at the pilot episode.

“I thought it was really, really cool. I can’t wait to watch it again,” said 10-year-old Alana Firman.

“They’re getting to see it one month to the day, ahead of everyone else in the United States,” said Chris Marman.

Based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, who after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities.

“I thought it was awesome. I loved it very, very much,” said 11-year-old Makena Harding.

It just so happens the Superparents of the creators of the show live in the Coachella Valley and helped make this showing possible.

“There’s only one executive producer whose parents aren’t here,” said Valerie Schechter, parent of executive producer Sarah Schechter.

Our own super anchor Brooke Beare used her public speaking powers to emcee the event and saved the day for young ones by signing autographs.

The big screen showing was all about girl power.

“I’d watch it a million times because it’s just talking about how girls can do anything anyone else can,” said 10-year-old Alana Firman.

“I liked how positive she was. No matter what happened she was always, always positive,” said Makena.

Supergirl set a positive and strong example for new fans.

“I don’t care what kind of super power I’d have. I would just like to help people. It just makes me really happy when I help people,” said Firman.

“Supergirl” premieres Monday, October 26 at 8:30 p.m. on CBS Local 2.
