Firefighters still fighting stubborn brush fire near Salton Sea

Firefighters were still working to extinguish a brush fire burning north of the Salton Sea Friday morning.

Cal Fire crews were on scene overnight and said the fire had grown to 50 acres, and has a potential to grow to 200 acres.

The fire began just before 5:30 p.m. near Powerline Road and Dos Palmas Spring Road in Mecca and North Shore area.

Cal Fire said the flames were burning in tamarisk and palm trees making it hard to put out.

There were working the fire with BLM crews and had 10 fire trucks, 2 water tenders and two hand crews on scene helping to put out the blaze.

No structures were threatened.

There was no word on the exact cause, but the fire’s timing was at about the same time that a strong storm cell moved through the area.
