Riverside County Sheriff’s Department offer Halloween safety tips
When it comes to Halloween most parents agree, there’s no room for tricks while their kids are getting their treats.
“I think we can try to avoid the danger by going to places that we know are safe,” said mother Lianne Gayler.
It’s the one day a year when it’s okay to take candy from strangers, which means parents and kids need to be alert.
“Just be aware of our surroundings, we talk to them about being aware of their surroundings. We try to wear clothes that aren’t super dark so people can see them,” said mother Ashley Matondi.
Most importantly always watch out for cars.
On average children are twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween.
So the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department has some advice.
“Someone carry a flashlight, try to wear bright clothing so that cars can see you, also if you’re going to cross the street walk don’t run and make sure you use the traffic light or cross walk signals,” said Armando Munoz with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Drivers need to be just as careful.
“Just make sure your lights are properly working, so you can see and also turn on your brights if you’re in a dark street and just be very patient. I know we tend to rush a lot and be aware that it is Halloween and there’s going to be a lot of children and a lot of pedestrians out in the neighborhood so just take your time,” Munoz said.
Remember to travel in groups of ghouls.
“We want to remind parents to obviously accompany their kids and if there’s teenagers that are going to be going out with their friends obviously travel in groups,” Munoz said.
Never approach a dark house, more than likely they’ve already run out of candy anyway.
Stick to areas you feel most comfortable in.
When the night is over and your checking your goodie bag, make sure you’re not getting any tricks along with your treats.
“I know some people are old school and do a homemade cookies. I tend to chuck them when they’re not looking. Something that’s store wrapped, keep those, the fun size candy,” said father Jeremy Haro.
Above all just use common sense and remember to have a ghoulishly good time
