Winds snap trees, crush car in La Quinta

Some people in La Quinta are cleaning up the damage after strong winds toppled trees Monday night.

Felipe Alvarez said he parked in a handicapped spot outside of Beer Hunter Sports Pub & Grill in La Quinta to watch football and have dinner. He was inside the restaurant when winds picked up and snapped the tree beside his vehicle, crushing crushed the roof of his car.

He said it caused an estimated $7,000 in damage.

“Right there and then it was just very sad. I’m not upset. It could’ve been worse, something could’ve happened to me, but moral of the story don’t park under a tree while it’s windy,” said Alvarez.

Alvarez is in a wheelchair and is grateful he wasn’t inside the car at the time. He said ironically, he’s a Farmers Insurance agent and spends part of his day helping other people deal with their emergencies.
