I-10 traffic slow-moving after garbage truck flipped over Tuesday

A Burrtec garbage truck caused some heavy traffic delays when it overturned on eastbound I-10 at about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Fortunately nobody was injured after the 42-year-old man driving the truck somehow lost control of the vehicle just west of Highway 86. But the crash did cause both eastbound lanes to be closed.

Officers said they were able to allow traffic to pass on the right shoulder of the interstate and delays were minor. But the road was expected to fully reopen by about 4 p.m., and viewers were calling us around 4:30 p.m. saying the interstate was backed up extensively near Coachella.

The driver was wearing his seat belt. Officers said alcohol and/or drugs don’t appear to be factors in the crash, but the official cause is still under investigation.

Tow trucks were brought in to upright the garbage truck to allow officers to reopen eastbound lanes.

Eastbound lanes of the interstate should reopen soon, but if you’re driving in the area, you should expect delays for the time being.
