Valley schools respond to threat to Los Angeles County schools

Valley School Districts are responding to the threats against Los Angeles County schools.

They said it’s important to stay vigilant even if the threat is not in our immediate area.

But not all of the responsibility falls on the school.

Heather Coladonato’s children go to Cielo Vista Charter School in Palm Springs.

She said she’s pleased with how Palm Springs Schools handled the potential threat.

“I think it’s important to be vigilant and aware not to live in fear and to reassure our children that our schools are safe,” Coladonato said.

The district sent out a statement Tuesday morning reading in part:

“We want to assure you that each of our campuses is being searched this morning and we also have extra security personnel on duty. We will also be communicating with local law enforcement agencies as needed…”

The district said nowadays you must take every threat seriously.

“We make sure when we hear anything like this we take all the precautions to make sure our kids are safe. Safety is our primary concern always has been always will be,” said Joan Boiko, public information officer for PSUSD.

Coachella Valley Unified schools got a lot of calls from concerned parents and put out a statement on its Facebook page.

Desert Sands sent out an alert saying it will be watching the situation closely.

Boiko said it’s also on the parents to keep their emergency contact information up to date.

And register others who can pick up your child when you can’t.

“On the emergency cards there are places for family and friends who are authorized to pick up a child or to answer a call for a child,” Boiko said.

Most importantly the district said to remind your child to report anything suspicious.

Coladonato said that’s extremely important to her children’s safety.

“It’s very important to be aware of your surroundings and what’s going on. We’re in a very interesting time and uncomfortable time,” Coladonato said.
