CHP says DUI arrests down over holiday weekend

The California Highway Patrol says local roadways were safer this New Year’s holiday weekend, as they increased patrols over the 4-day weekend.

According to a news release, CHP Officers arrested 17 motorists on suspicion of driving under the influence during which is down from 28 last year.

Additional CHP officers were on the streets during a maximum enforcement crackdown that ran from 6:01 p.m. Thursday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

As was the case for the previous two New Year’s holidays, no fatal crashes occurred in the region during the enforcement period, though there was one crash with injuries, the same as 2015, Officer Jairo Rivera said.

In all, there were 10 traffic crashes on roadways patrolled by the CHP’s Indio office during the holiday period, up from three last year.
