Tedesco Park shooting suspect arrested in New Jersey

The Desert Hot Springs Police Department announced Friday that the suspect accused in an attempted homicide shooting at a Desert Hot Springs park in November has been arrested in Bridgeton, New Jersey.

According to the release, 19-year-old Efrain Emanual Hyman was taken into custody on Thursday, January 7. He’s accused of shooting a man in the head at Tedesco Park on November 12. The victim survived after being treated at the hospital.

Tedesco Park is located at 12800 West Arroyo Drive.

Officers said they determined that Hyman specifically confronted the victim and shot him several times. Police attempted to locate Hyman but he was suspected of fleeing California following the shooting.

The Pacific Southwest Regional Task Force Team 6 was contacted to help locate Hyman. The joint-effort ultimately led to his arrest, authorities said in the release.

Hyman is currently in custody in New Jersey. Officials said no date for his return to Riverside County is available at this time. News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will track the progress as the suspect is transported back to California.

Initial report:

One of the victim’s was shot once and is still in serious but stable condition, according to police.

Through the investigation, officers identified the shooter as Efrain Hyman, with the help of multiple eye witnesses at the scene. Authorities haven’t been able to locate Hyman and he’s still on the run.

The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office has obtained a warrant for Hyman’s arrest with a cash bond of $1M.

Anyone who knows the location of Hyman is asked to call Detective Larry Essex with the Desert Hot Springs Police Department at (760) 329-6411 ext. 322. You can also report an anonymous tip to Valley Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-7867.

Commander Jim Henson said both victims were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center. One man was in critical condition at the time and the other was in stable condition, according to officers at the scene.

Police set up crime tape around the entire park but it appeared the shooting happened at the skate park itself.

We talked with people who live right next to the park.

“I have always kind of felt safe because there is a camera that is right there that leads right back to the police station I’ve seen it on the monitors,” said Lorraine Carwile lives across the street with her three children.

“This is not the place where there should be a freaking shootout, it’s unnecessary when there are kids present this is a beautiful park they are trying to make it better, but there needs to be more police presence and more community involvement,” said Salle K of Desert Hot Springs.
