16-year-old arrested for shooting near Rancho Mirage HS

We’re learning more about the suspect from Wednesday morning’s shooting near Rancho Mirage High School.

Deputy Munoz with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said a 16-year-old boy was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect’s identity isn’t being released because he’s a juvenile.

The teen is accused of shooting a man near Ramon Road and Rattler Way at about 10 a.m. Wednesday. The victim was taken to the hospital with a non life-threatening gunshot wound, Munoz said in the release.

Many were questioning whether or not the shooter was a student at Rancho Mirage High School, but officials with the Palm Springs Unified School District said he wasn’t a student at any school in the P.S.U.S.D.

There’s no word on what led up to the shooting at this point. News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will continue to follow up with authorities to bring you the latest information.

Initial Report

1:00 p.m. Update: Sheriff Department opens Eastbound lanes of Ramon Road at Bob Hope Drive. Westbound lanes are still shut down due to shooting investigation.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting that forced a temporary lockdown at Rancho Mirage High School and James Workman Middle School Wednesday morning.

Both lockdowns were lifted around 11:30 a.m.

Deputy Armando Munoz with the sheriff’s department said they have detained a person whom they are now questioning about the shooting. Nobody has officially been arrested at this time.

Sheriff’s officials said they were searching the school campus and deemed it safe.

Authorities received a call at 10 a.m. about a man suffering from a gunshot wound on Ramon Road between Rattler Way and Da Vall Drive. Ramon Road was closed in both directions between the two streets while deputies were on scene.

The victim has been taken to the hospital but the extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.
