Alleged family of shoplifters caught on cam in Cathedral City

Cathedral City police are investigating after a family was seen on surveillance camera stuffing merchandise into their shirts and bags, and they even had young children with them at the time.

The store owner spoke to us Wednesday afternoon and said there were four women and one man in the group, and they had three young girls and one boy with them as they proceeded to shoplift.

The theft occurred last Friday at Pony Express Western Outfitters, located at 68535 E Palm Canyon Dr. The store owner has clear surveillance video and recently posted it on the Cathedral City Neighborhoods Facebook Group.

The video shows one clear instance of theft as a young woman blatantly sticks a pair of boots in her purse. Other video segments apparently show additional family members stealing items, the owner said.

Cathedral City police have identified the suspects.

KESQ and CBS Local 2 heard from the owner that one of the family members wants to return the merchandise so they don’t get in trouble. The owner said he wants them to come back to the store and pay full price, or face the police.

We don’t know the total value of the items that were taken. We’ll keep you updated as police continue to investigate.
