Modernism Week wraps up in Palm Springs

Modernism Week wraps up this weekend in the Coachella Valley.

As this year’s celebration of mid-century modern architecture comes to end, designers and organizers reflect on the event’s growth.

Thousands of visitors flock to Palm Springs for a taste of the mid century modern architecture and lifestyle.

“Last time we were here we did an architecturaltour so we felt like modernism week was totally up our alley,” said Vanda Katathikan and Ryan Landes, who are visiting from Los Angeles.

It’s just a glimpse into what’s largely recognized as the golden era of Southern California.

In amidst all of the parties, tours, lectures and exhibits sits the Christopher Kennedy Compound.

This is the third year the Christopher Kennedy Compound has showcased the works of famous designers, each transforming a room into the contemporary chic that celebrates the Palm Springs lifestyle

The man behind it all, Christopher Kennedy, said if the home could talk it would say it just put on its favorite outfit.

“The mission of the Christopher Kennedy Compound is to update a classic mid century house, using the best of modern technology, bringing together the worlds top interior designers and we want to inspire the 4 thousand people who will tour the home and the millions who will see it in print and social media,” said Kennedy.

Kennedy said he gives the good rooms to his famous friends but saves a special room for his designs.

“I keep the kitchen for myself and secretly I think that’s the heart of the home,” Kennedy said.

Since it’s start, Modernism Week has grown and evolved year after year.

“It started as a smaller three-day weekend event where we were exploring the neighborhood and taking bus tours and it’s grown to more than 250 events over the 11 day period,” said Lisa Vossler Smith, the executive director or Modernism Week.

Last year the event drew nearly 60,000 visitors pumping an estimated $22 million into the local economy.

Many of the events fund local preservation organizations.

“We help to support other groups in Palm Springs that are both preservation and design and community related,” Vossler Smith said.

The week, giving visitors and locals a taste of what it’s like to live the modernist life.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to get in on the modernism week fun you still have time.

Events wrap up Sunday.
