Process of buying a gun in California

Record numbers of people are arming themselves after the San Bernardino terrorist attack.

The Sheriff’s Department is now working on a huge backlog of people also applying for conceal and carry weapons permits.

So, what are the gun laws in California and how hard is it to buy a firearm?

The first obstacle is a 30 question test to obtain a California Firearms Safety Certificate. The test is rarely failed and costs $25 dollars.

After that, a shopper must pick out a weapon to buy and get a safe handling demonstration to make sure they know the basics about loading and unloading the firearm.

The third step is filling out the Firearms Transaction Record from the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

That form is the background check that makes sure you you’re eligible to buy a firearm.

Finally, a gun buyer in California has to complete a Dealer’s Record of Sale of Firearm form for the state.

Once those items are completed, gun buyers must wait 10 days before picking up their firearm from the dealer.
