People sending gifts of gratitude to local police

In the wake of the massacre in Dallas where five police officers were killed, people across the country are showing their support for their local police departments.

“I just wanted to say thank you to each and everyone of you to serving and protecting us,” Dale Mondary, chief of the Desert Hot Springs Police Department, read from a thank-you card sent to the station. It’s one of many cards and other gifts that have been sent to the DHSPD station.

The department has been receiving gifts like flowers, homemade baked goods and store-bought cakes. Many of them coming with messages of support for the men and women who are sworn to protect.

“Our officers have walked into Starbucks and have people buy them a cup of coffee. Just the outpouring of support has been extremely touching and just incredible,” Mondary said.

People in Desert Hot Springs know just how dangerous it can be to wear a badge, but they know their officers are the first to respond to any situation.

“Any support that we can give them, I am totally for that. It is very important,” said Eileen Hogan, who works in the city.

South of DHS, the chief of the Palm Springs Police Department Tweeted a picture of a group of officers holding bagels that were dropped of by a business to say thank you.

Some organizations based in Dallas are showing their thanks by paying for hotel rooms of officers from across the country to attend funerals in Texas.
