Indio Police Department swears in new police chief

The Indio Police Department’s 19th police chief was sworn in Tuesday.

Michael R. Washburn, a 30-year veteran of the Seattle Police Department, takes over from retiring Chief Richard Twiss.

“Captain Washburn has risen steadily through the ranks in Seattle and we believe he’s uniquely qualified to succeed Chief Twiss here in Indio,” said Indio City Manager Dan Martinez. “This is another example of our city attracting top talent from throughout the nation.”

Washburn started his career in 1986 as a patrol officer in Seattle, rising through the ranks in the department’s Anti-Crime Team, Juvenile Unit, Investigations Bureau and Violent Crimes Section. His time in Seattle also included posts as precinct commander and a stint as interim assistant chief from December 2013 to March 2015.

“I am extremely pleased to be joining this highly professional department, which has been lauded for its innovative approaches to policing and community engagement,” Washburn said. “I look forward to helping continue that positive momentum and serving the fine residents of this city.”

An official swearing-in ceremony will be held during the Indio City Council’s Sept. 7 meeting.
