5 pm Report:
We are learning new details about an officer-involved shooting in Palm Springs earlier today. Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes just addressed the media, and confirmed that one of his officers was injured during a shooting that sent a suspect to the hospital.
It all started around 1:30 pm, after a witness called police to report a man acting erratically outside a Rite Aid store near the downtown area. Palm Springs police received several 911 calls regarding the man, with reports suggesting that he might have been armed, said Sgt. William Hutchinson.
Callers reported that the man was making threatening statements, possibly racial and homophobic slurs, and was seen urinating in public, according to the sergeant. Officers who tried to detain the man got into a struggle while trying to take him into custody, resulting in shots fired.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. No word on the injuries to the officer, we are told another officer was involved but not hurt. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is now handling the case.
Chief Reyes asks that anyone who saw anything is to call the Palm Springs Police Department at (760) 327-1441.
