Indio SuperTarget slated to close in early 2017

A big blow for retail in Indio, as CBS Local 2 and KESQ confirmed the SuperTarget is slated to close in early 2017. A recorded message says the Indio SuperTarget is still hiring, however several employees told CBS Local 2/KESQ they got the news Monday. Carl Morgan, Economic Development Director for the city of Indio said he heard about the planned closure Tuesday morning. He says the city immediately started “opening up a line of communication with Target to see what they can do to keep this important retailer in the community. We were as surprised to hear about it as anyone else.” Target corporate spokesperson Molly Synder said via e-mail eligible employees would be given the option to transfer to other Coachella Valley Target stores. 130 people work at that location. “The decision to close a Target store is not made lightly,” said Snyder. “We typically decide to close a store after a careful consideration of the long-term financial performance of a particular location. Typically a store is closed as a result of seeing several years of decreasing profitability.” The store on Jackson Street and the I-10 opened in October 2008. “We are still trying to retain SuperTarget in our city,” said Morgan. “The city is desirous of keeping this important resource in the community. It will take a few days to have that conversation.” Morgan said he’d already gotten a number of phone calls from residents “who really want to keep Target in town.” Stay with CBS Local 2 and KESQ as negotiations take place.
