Arizona woman killed, two injured in I-10 crash near Cactus City rest area

A woman was killed and two others were seriously injured Monday morning when a car went over the side of Interstate 10 near the Cactus City Rest Area and overturned.

Cactus City is located east of the Coachella Valley as you head toward Chiriaco Summit.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased woman as 94-year-old Leona Mae Burns of Scottsdale, Arizona.

The car was being driven by a 73-year-old man from Mesa, Arizona. He and a 65-year-old woman, also from Mesa, Arizona, were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries following the crash, according to a release from Officer Mike Radford with the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at 9:55 a.m. on eastbound I-10, east of the Cactus City Rest Area. According to officers, the vehicle overturned in a wash just east of the rest stop.

The left lane of the freeway was shut down while authorities investigated and cleared the wreckage. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
